Australian music: Teachers-Performance

Teachers

Syllabus outcomes: 5.1 and 5.2

Have a look at the student page to see the performance task.

The aim of this task is to get students to write and perform lyrics. This will enhance their ability to be creative. It is important to get students to do practical activities in music. Otherwise, if learning is mostly done through theory and explanation, music may seem daunting and irrelevant. It is the practical component that teaches kids about music on a deeper level. They have the choice of singing or rapping and are asked to record their performance using technology.

For the purposes of this lesson, it is assumed that the teacher and students have access to computers with GarageBand. If this facility is not available, it can be completed by other means. I have provided the backing track as an Mp3, here.
This way, you could complete the task by asking students to download the Mp3, and listen to it. They could then do this task in class by writing down their lyrics and then notating their melody, unless they are rapping. They could also use the backing track in class to perform their lyrics.

Preferably, it should be done using technology in some way, if the facility is available. Another option would be to use a free music program on the student’s laptops. Students could come up with their own backing track by using loops, and then write lyrics to accompany their track.
